Eimsbüttel & Eppendorf

The Hamburg CARD - Perfect for your holidays

CITY AREA PORTRAIT Welcome to Eppendorf & Eimsbüttel!

Here you will find magnificent old building facades and exquisite restaurants as well as chic boutiques and many small owner-managed shops. While Eppendorf is very chic and well-kept, Eimsbüttel treats itself to the style of Hanseatic calmness. But both quarters offer a lot of water and green spaces and are therefore extremely popular as a residential area for hamburgers - rightly so. Even as a guest you quickly feel at home here.

Moin, we are Torben und Sabrina

We have a small factory in the borough of Hamburg Eppendorf. We really like this borough around Eppendorfer Landstraße and Eppendorf Baum, with its beautiful Art Nouveau buildings and parks, cafés, boutiques and many small shops. It is also close to the adjacent Eimsbüttel around Osterstraße, which has many nice places, too. Residents here know each other and often stop for a little chat. This can be best experienced at Isemarkt, one of Hamburg's most beautiful weekly markets. Eppendorf is more on the fancy side while in Eimsbüttel you will find more corners with a rougher charm. However, both have plenty of green oases. We are happy to take you on a journey to discover our favourite places in Hamburg and show you some interesting sights and insider tips.

Would you have known?

Rappers Samy Deluxe and Jan Delay grew up in Eppendorf and describe their teen years in their song “Lang is her”

Close to the Eppendorf market you will find Florian Viele's furniture shop.

IN THE MORNING

Cream tarts and surprises

When it comes to having breakfast in Eppendorf, you can choose from a large variety of small cafés. We like to go to Hermitage (Martinistraße 6), where St. Petersburg-born Lina Zokolow serves not only a fragrant, aromatic coffee and sweet rolls, but she is also well-known for her delicious tarts which will have you drooling just by looking at them. But it is still a bit too early for cream and cake, so we saunter off. Close to Eppendorfer Markt, you will find Florian Viel’s furniture shop (Eppendorfer Landstraße 117). In fact, it is more of a treasure trove, where one can find many beautiful, strange and unconventional objects, such as vases, chests or china. Since you're already here, you should also drop by the print shop Moin Mein Hamburg, a little gem on Ludolfstraße 42. Owner Achim Witt runs nine old printing machines in his manufactory and produces posters and maps, which can be imprinted according to your own idea, using wood or lead letters.

AT NOON

Côte d’Azur at Lehmweg

At Lehmweg, you will find a great choice of restaurants. We like to go to Küchenfreunde (Lehmweg 30). Their classic boiled beef and meatballs are so delicious (and not even too heavy) that we fully enjoy coming here. Only a few metres down the road, you will find a great number of authentic stores, one next to the other. Today, we will explore the Bon Voyager Interior (Lehmweg 32). With bright-coloured furniture, owner Janina Krinke wants to convey the feeling of Côte d'Azur - and you can indeed feel that as soon as you enter the shop. If you are looking for the latest fashion designers, go to boutique Queen for a Day (Lehmweg 28). Cheap isn’t on the menu, but it sure is inspirational. Then we treat ourselves to a double espresso at Café Little Amsterdam (Klosterallee 69). The view at Isebekkanal, which goes from Eimsbüttel past Hoheluftbrücke (borough Hoheluft-East) and flows through Eppendorf and finally into the Alster at Heilwig Park, is already worth the stay. If you’re done with shopping, just like we are, get yourself a city bike, which can be borrowed from numerous stations, and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere along the green spaces. We will drive along the Isebekkanal, along the Kaiser-Friedrich-Ufer, to the popular fitness club Kaifu-Lodge (with a public swimming pool), turn right and arrive at Osterstraße, the main traffic artery of Eimsbüttel, with many nice shops, cafés and restaurants. Far away from the concrete jungle, we’ll spend the afternoon at park Am Weiher (German for “by the pond”), which is surrounded by beautiful willow trees and is a great place to linger.

IN THE EVENING

Bowls, ramen and special highballs

People used to say that you have to go to another borough to enjoy an evening out. That's no longer true for Eimsbüttel and Eppendorf. If we take the Eppendorfer Weg, the connection between the boroughs of Eppendorf and Eimsbüttel, we occasionally stop by Boilermann Bar (Eppendorfer Weg 211). They have one of the best non-alcohol basil cocktails we've ever had. The Botanic District (Hegestraße 14-16) is a stylish bar in Eppendorf which also offers a great choice of burgers and bowls. Personally, we love their authentic highball cocktails with rosemary and lavender. Anyone who is into Asian cuisine like we are can assuage their hunger at Ramen Bar  Zipang (Eppendorfer Weg 62) and enjoy one of the spicy noodle soups. Tonight, we will treat ourselves a few steps down the road at restaurant Zipang (Eppendorfer Weg 171), where we will have some caramelised eel and salmon with teriyaki sauce. Just delicious...

CITY AREA PORTRAIT Altona & Ottensen

For strolling, having a coffee, taking a walk or having some delicious food – situated directly at the Elbe and traversed by parks, Altona & Ottensen are considered to be charming and diverse districts with character. Brick walls create a rather rough atmosphere in Altona, while it is lively and colourful in Ottensen.

CITY AREA PORTRAIT Blankenese & Elbe outskirts

The former fishing and seamen's village of Blankenese is situated directly on the Elbe. It is the perfect starting point for hopping on a sailing boat or on the Elbe ferry, or for taking long walks along the shore. Another highlight is a visit to the Treppenviertel (German for staircase quartier) with a spectacular view of the lighthouse and the Falkenstein shore.
