Venice, Milan, Rome – a stay in Italy was simply part of a composer's artistic training in the 18th century. The young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart travelled to Italy three times with his father, primarily to secure commissions for stage works in the motherland of opera. During long waiting times or in the evenings in the pub, the first string quartets were composed here in 1772, almost incidentally. These have gone down in music history as the "Milan quartets" primarily because of their place of origin. In fact, their musical form also reveals northern Italian models, which the 16-year-old Mozart found in compositions by Baldassare Galuppi, Kapellmeister at San Marco in Venice. The "VenEthos Ensemble" from Treviso has selected string quartets by Galuppi, but also by other baroque masters from the Venetian region, and compares them with the rarely played Milan quartets. The highest level of playing skill and sophistication is guaranteed: "Chapeau!" was the verdict in the renowned French music magazine Diapason on VenEthos' historically informed recording of this chamber music gem by the young Mozart.
