Dialogue in the dark

Journey into absolute darkness

An exhibition course in which there is nothing to see, but much to discover. Hear, smell, feel and experience the everyday world in the dark in a completely new way. The DIALOG IM DUNKELN experience in Hamburg is a significant exhibition that captivates with its uniqueness.

Visitors are guided by blind people through a dark world of smells, sounds and textures. An exhibition for the discovery of the invisible, in which there is guaranteed nothing to see, but plenty to discover...

A strange & at the same time fascinating world

In the middle of Hamburg's Speicherstadt, blind and visually impaired people guide visitors through the exhibition DIALOG IM DUNKELN. The exhibition is located in completely darkened rooms. Accordingly, the guest does not see any exhibits, art in the form of pictures or other plastic impressions. It is a journey into a seemingly familiar and now strange, fascinating world. A world in which scents, winds, different surface structures and sounds, but also words and touches take the place of optical stimuli. The familiar is turned upside down, the self-evident is called into question.

Everyday situations, such as a walk through a park or a visit to a café, develop into a unique adventure in absolutely lightless rooms. The visitors experience how they entrust themselves to blind strangers who guide them through the darkness with absolute safety. The blind companion becomes the number one reference person, as the visitor is dependent on him/her for the entire tour. The sighted become the blind and the blind become the sighted. By means of various environmental influences and everyday situations, the visitors experience how one perceives the world and life in the dark and how various impressions are experienced exclusively through the senses of smell, hearing and touch. Several everyday situations are recreated in the rooms, including being in a bar, in a city park or in the middle of the city.

Dinner in the dark

Those who wish can also participate in a dinner in the dark. This takes place on different days and can only be attended by reservation. At the Dinner in the Dark you will experience a very special kind of culinary delights, because here the eye is guaranteed not to eat with you. In this setting, blind people serve the guest a menu consisting of four courses in a completely dark room. The culinary journey starts with a champagne reception in the foyer. A seasonally changing 4-course menu then awaits you in the dark restaurant. A challenge for palate and table culture. The cost of such a Dinner in the Dark is 69.00 euros.

DIALOG IM DUNKELN has been held in Hamburg since 2000, and has since been enjoyed by countless visitors. In the morning (Tue-Fri) from 09:00 - 12:45 the 60-minute standard tours take place. In the afternoons (Tue-Fri) from 13:00 - 17:00, as well as on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, the 90-minute extended tours take place.
Experience social sustainability

The Dialoghaus stands for a world without prejudices. The aim is to inspire visitors to think or act in new ways through intensive impressions. A positive social attitude, empathy and unprejudiced interaction are encouraged. To this end, the company employs more than 60 percent deaf or visually impaired people and contributes to finding jobs for the visually impaired, blind or deaf worldwide.
