Forest, river and heath in the east

Cycling for a good climate

This great gravel tour takes you to the east of Hamburg, where you can immerse yourself in the diverse nature around rivers, forests and moors - perfect for working out and unwinding.

The tour starts in the middle of Hamburg. On the banks of the Outer Alster, you climb onto the saddle and ride along its banks until you reach the Mundsburg Canal. Here you leave the Alster and follow the canal, which later turns into the Wandse. Along the river you ride on natural paths through the lush greenery. Shortly before Rahlstedt you turn east. Here the route leads you through the Stapelfelder Moor and on beautiful bike paths and field paths further into the Billetal. After a short passage along the river, you dive into the beautiful Sachsenwald forest, where you ride a large loop that brings you back to the wild and romantic Billetal at the end. Pristine nature awaits here. Accordingly, the trails are raw, on which you also have to deal with some roots. Trails can best be ridden on a gravel bike when they are dry. This type of surface is not to everyone's taste, so the short passage through the Billetal can also be bypassed by crossing the river at the beginning and riding parallel to it on a wide path through the forest.

Then you follow the Bille on less wild paths through Wohltorf and Wentorf to the nature reserve Boberger Niederungen with its beautiful heath. From here you then ride via Horn and Hamm back to the starting point at the Außenalster.

This is a moderately difficult gravel tour. Good basic condition is required. The tour may include passages with loose ground that are difficult to ride.

The Alster divides into the Binnen- and Außenalster at the Lombardsbrücke bridge. The Außenalster in particular offers excellent recreational opportunities with its numerous parks and adjacent sports facilities. The banks of the Alster in Harvestehude, Uhlenhorst and Winterhude are the preferred living quarters of the wealthy Hamburg residents.
