Highlights along the Elbe

On a long Elbe cruise

Between the impressive skyline of HafenCity, the historic Speicherstadt and the rugged North Sea, there are around 100 kilometres of the Elbe that you shouldn't miss. While your cruise ship glides majestically along the Elbe, numerous areas and regions, historical sites and impressive buildings pass by on port and starboard, all of which are worth a second glance. The most beautiful are described here and marked on the map.

The impressive complex of warehouses was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015 together with the Kontorhaus district. As if that weren't enough, there are numerous cafés, restaurants and museums in the immediate vicinity. On a harbour and canal cruise with one of the many barge ships you can see the Speicherstadt from a completely different perspective and experience it up close!

As the name suggests, the Landungsbrücken are Hamburg's most famous water station. From here you can start on one of the numerous harbour tours, eat one of the most popular fish sandwiches in the city or just relax with a coffee or ice cream and enjoy the view of the harbour and the "big pots". Don't miss the sunset! It's really romantic...

The Hamburg fish market is known throughout the world. Even tourists from Japan, almost 9,000 km away, flock to Hamburg for a visit here. Every Sunday from sunrise there are fresh fish, vegetables and other delicious specialities. But don't get up too late, because the spectacle is over by 9:30 a.m. at the latest.

Since 1974, the Köhlbrandbrücke has been the most important connector in the port of Hamburg and one of the city's landmarks. The bridge stretches almost four kilometres across the container port, and more than 45,000 vehicles cross the southern arm of the Elbe every day, which here is called the Köhlbrand.

Willkomm-Höft is a world-famous ship welcoming facility. Every day from sunrise to sunset (in summer from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.) every incoming and outgoing ship over 500 GRT is welcomed. The Hamburg flag is dipped, the appropriate national anthem sounds and a greeting in the respective national language is heard. Around 85 million tons of goods are shipped daily from the four terminals of Europe's second largest container port. And the number is growing every year. The container terminals in Hamburg are not accessible to normal visitors. It would be far too dangerousu. But the container terminals in Hamburg can also be seen from the Elbe during a harbour tour.
