Since 1974, the Köhlbrandbrücke has been the most important connector in the port of Hamburg and one of the city's landmarks. The bridge stretches almost four kilometres across the container port, and more than 45,000 vehicles cross the southern arm of the Elbe every day, which here is called the Köhlbrand.

Visitors can stroll along the jetties and read the information boards; some ships also offer guided tours. There are no special times for sightseeing, but most crews are happy to allow visitors on board.

Willkomm-Höft is a world-famous ship welcoming facility. Every day from sunrise to sunset (in summer from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.) every incoming and outgoing ship over 500 GRT is welcomed. The Hamburg flag is dipped, the appropriate national anthem sounds and a greeting in the respective national language is heard. Visitors can watch the ships arriving and departing at the Schulauer Fährhaus café and restaurant.

Around 85 million tons of goods are shipped daily from the four terminals of Europe's second largest container port. And the number is growing every year. The container terminals in Hamburg are not accessible to normal visitors. It would be far too dangerousu. But the container terminals in Hamburg can also be seen from the Elbe during a harbour tour.
