Plácido Domingo and Hamburg have been closely connected for decades, with the Hanseatic city playing an important role in his career. In January 1967, he made his European debut at the Hamburg State Opera as Cavaradossi in Puccini’s »Tosca«. A few years later, in 1975, another major milestone followed when he made his debut there as »Otello« in Verdi’s opera of the same name. The versatile artist’s stage career, which continues to see him work as a singer and conductor and has also included a tenure as an opera director, encompasses more than 150 roles and over 4,400 performances at leading opera houses and concert halls around the world. The programme of »The Diamond Jubilee Gala« features arias, duets and instrumental pieces from opera, operetta and zarzuela, a genre of Spanish musical theatre that is particularly close to Plácido Domingo’s heart. He shares the festive concert evening with soprano Juliana Grigoryan and tenor Rame Lahaj. They are accompanied by the Mecklenburg State Orchestra Schwerin conducted by Eugene Kohn.
