What are today’s responses to the great string quartets of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven? For many years, the Kuss Quartet has been bringing fresh perspectives to the work of our era’s most significant composers: through commissioned works and world premieres, it continually expands the repertoire of this almost mystical ensemble.
Enno Poppe, Isabell Mundry, Mark Andre, Rebecca Saunders – the list of composers represented reads like a »who’s who« of contemporary music. Some of them have sent the quartet musical postcards: concise miniatures from distant soundscapes. Different styles and approaches come together and unfold into a kaleidoscopic panorama of today’s quartet art.
Alongside these short pieces, the programme features two larger works: Francisco Coll’s First String Quartet »Códices« and Johannes Maria Staud’s Second String Quartet, a co-commission by the Elbphilharmonie. In his »Cahier des équilibres mouvants«, Staud develops a multi-layered interplay of balance and musical reflection on our planet’s delicate ecosystems.
