George Crotty has forged his own exciting vocabulary pushing the boundaries of the cello. Versed in many styles, his inquisitive eclecticism draws on diverse influences within jazz and global music including post-bop, modal jazz, Indian Raga, and Arabic Maqam. Crotty’s modernist genre-bending is heavily influenced by his hometown of Toronto’s vibrant pluralism. His compositions are further illuminated by John Murchison (bass) and Jeremy Smith (percussion). Their cross-cultural interplay deviates from a trio’s typical hierarchy in an exploration of groove and colour, lending Crotty’s tunes an exciting three-dimensional quality.
The trio has toured in North America and Europe, performingat the Royal Conservatory of Music’s 21C Festival , the Copenhagen Vinterjazz Festival , and the New Directions Cello Festival. In 2025 they released their third album, »Heart Music«, as well as »Nishabourak«, a collaboration with Persian maestro, Hamid Motebassem, on Link Music Lab Records.
