How would Eric Claption have sounded playing with Derek Bailey? Hard to imagine! The renowned Berlin guitarist Andreas Willers and his trio like to face such challenges and tangible confrontations in their own works and in works that cover a wide spectrum from McCartney to McLaughlin, from Mingus to Gentle Giant. This outstanding live band takes a proactive approach to redefining the relationship between jazz and rock from an avant-garde perspective. Virtuoso stylistic confidence is combined with humor and a contemporary connection to the familiar.
On their current second album, `Suite Of Soaps', the Berlin trio DEREK PLAYS ERIC once again renegotiates nothing less than the boundaries between jazz, free improvisation and rock, between the avant-garde and the familiar and accessible in a way that is as intelligent as it is emotional and unique. The trio has existed since the beginning of 2015; the basic idea was a colleague's only half-serious question about how his two favorite British guitarists of the 60s, Derek Bailey and Eric Clapton, would have sounded together? The answer is given in an intelligent and energetic performance.
