Did you know that about 90 million footballs are produced every year?
In Sialkot alone, a city in Pakistan, around 40,000 people produce around 70 million balls every year, including for adidas, Puma and Nike. The sporting goods industry generates billions in sales, but not much of that reaches the workers in the factories. Globalized supply chains bring with them social and ecological problems, such as a high carbon footprint due to long transport routes or the injuries associated with hand-sewn balls.
Each worker sews 4 to 6 balls in one day. Payment is usually made per ball. With wages of less than one euro per ball, working days of 12 to 14 hours without a break are not uncommon. Fair play is different.
The Fair Trade City of Hamburg and the Scharlatan Theater take a close look at the production conditions in the sporting goods industry - humorously, wittily and educationally.
The participatory street theater in Mönckebergstrasse in front of Jupiter takes place as part of the action week “KOSMOS Jupiter. Solidarity Economy. Fair Action” from May 2nd to 11th.
