Deutsches Schauspielhaus

Enjoy culture in a classical atmosphere - at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus the old masters are breathed back into life in new productions.

A great theatre experience in the heart of Hamburg

With its magnificent neo-baroque theatre hall and seating for around 1,200, the Deutsches SchauSpielHaus Hamburg is one of the largest and most beautiful theatres in Europe. Just a few steps away from the main railway station, the traditional theatre can look back on 125 years of eventful history: founded in 1900 on the initiative of committed citizens, it is still a defining venue in the German-speaking theatre landscape today.

Under the directorship of Karin Beier, a top-class ensemble presents a varied programme together with directors from all over Europe - from new plays on current topics to contemporary interpretations of great theatre classics. In 2024, the Deutsches SchauSpielHaus was selected for the project ‘ANTHROPOLIS: Ungeheuer. City. Thebes.’ as “Theatre of the Year”.

Young SchauSpielHaus

Young theatre lovers also get their money's worth: the Junges SchauSpielHaus on Wiesendamm shows award-winning productions for children and young people.

Your visit

The Deutsches SchauSpielHaus is centrally located opposite the main railway station. The central bus station (ZOB) can be reached on foot in about three minutes. The magnificent building was extensively renovated in 2013 and impresses with its rich neo-baroque décor. The box office opens one hour before each performance.
