Active wheelchair sports scene in Hamburg

Sailing, biking, tennis, fencing or basketball with a wheelchair - Hamburg's sports clubs and associations are active in wheelchair sports. Inclusive groups and courses are all about learning from each other, building understanding, breaking down prejudices and doing sport and having fun together with or without disabilities. The competitions and colourful events throughout the year are particularly exciting. Here, everyone can take part and watch!

Helga Cup Inclusion: Inclusive sailing regatta for women

Since 2020, women sailors with and without disabilities have been setting sail together on the Outer Alster at the Helga Cup INKLUSION organised by the North German Regatta Association. True to the motto "everyone helps everyone and everything is possible", the crews set off with high spirits, enthusiasm and exceptional team spirit.

In addition to the sailing event, there is a colourful programme with lots of inclusive competitions: one of the highlights is the wheelchair SUP regatta. A team of six people, including two wheelchair users, paddle together on the extra-large SUPs. In addition to speed and skill, team spirit is what counts on the board to master the course.

Sporttag Inklusiv (Inclusive sports day)

All participants in the annual inclusive sports day (links to external German site) have fun moving. Whether with or without a disability, young or old: the common goal in the city park is the sports badge. Everyone can take part in numerous activities at the edge of the race course, jumping pit and finish line. Anyone who wants to can test their wheelchair driving skills on the wheelchair course.

Wheelchair basketball and unified sports festival

Wheelchair basketball has a strong fan base, and not just since the World Championships in Hamburg. In summer 2018, the second largest disabled sports event after the Paralympics took place in Hamburg for the first time in Germany. The world's best players competed for the title in Wilhelmsburg's Inselpark and put on a top-class sporting event. Young wheelchair users can try out the sport at tryouts organised by Hamburg sports clubs.

Where the wheelchair basketball players sweated it out in 2018, inclusive sport returns for the Unified Sports Festival as part of the Active City Festival (external site in German). Then young and old, with and without disabilities, are invited to get active together, compete in competitions and have fun.
