The first comprehensive solo exhibition of Larry Lazarus’ photographs and the final solo exhibition of Gallery Lazarus in Wexstraße
With THE LAZARUS LEGACY – photographs, Gallery Lazarus presents the own photographic work of its founder Larry Lazarus for the first time in a comprehensive solo exhibition. Many knew Lazarus, who died in February 2026, as a Master Printer of analogue black-and-white photography – the man who brought the images of others into the light for decades. Now, his own photographic eye takes centre stage.
The exhibition is also the final solo exhibition in the Gallery Lazarus space in Wexstraße before this chapter closes on 31 July 2026.

Larry Lazarus, born in London and for decades a defining figure in analogue black-and-white photography in Hamburg, was known to many as a Master Printer. In his darkroom, he brought the works of other photographers into the light. With THE LAZARUS LEGACY – photographs, his own photographic work is now presented comprehensively for the first time.
Curated by his daughter Joya Erlebach, the exhibition shows analogue silver gelatin prints from several decades. Lazarus’ photographs are shaped by light, shadow, contrast, composition and a rare connection between eye, craft and the work of light. They reveal his way of moving through the world: melancholic, humorous, precise, tender and sometimes “hübschhässlich” – beautifully ugly – as he might have called it himself.
The exhibition is a tribute to his life’s work, a personal farewell and the final solo exhibition of Gallery Lazarus in Wexstraße.
