detailed description

From market to market - a short trip through two particularly popular districts of Hamburg

Eppendorf and Winterhude - who doesn’t know these beautiful, at the same time quite elegant Hamburg districts on the middle course of the Alster? But did you know that Eppendorf, for example, has a history that probably goes back to the 9th century? Documented for the first time in 1140, the Danish kings also made claims to power in later years.

After all: Danish kings were considered relatively tolerant at that time. So it may not be a coincidence that Eppendorf has always been home to particularly creative, even revolting people, such as the writer Wolfgang Borchert. Borchert is still known to many through his anti-war poem "Say No!" known. Transport worker Ernst Thälmann, chairman of the KPD in the Weimar Republic, is also a famous Eppendorfer. To this day, a memorial in Eppendorf commemorates his work. Today there are also many artists at home in Eppendorf, such as rappers Samy Deluxe and Jan Deley, but also Karl Dall.

The district really boomed long before. After the gate was lifted in Hamburg in 1861, several very wealthy Hamburg merchants were able to settle in this beautiful area at the mouth of the Tarpenbek, on the Isebek and Leinpfad canals, directly on the middle course of the Alster. It wasn't until years later that the multi-storey buildings, which are still rich in stucco and ornaments, were built. The district, which is now pretty chic and expensive, got a real kick in 1884 with the founding of what was then Eppendorfer Hospital. This later gave rise to the university clinic, where over 6000 people work today.

But the history of Eppendorf is more diverse, has many facets and faces. The Holthusenbad, built in 1914, is also a reminder of the hygiene requirements that existed at that time for the poorer population of Eppendorf, who also existed. Background: In the west of Eppendorf, between Lokstedter Weg, Fricke and Tarpenbekstrasse, unadorned workers' quarters emerged from the 1870s. The SPD and KPD were particularly strong here later.

But today these areas are also dominated by the middle class. This home-style flair, at Kellinghusenpark, at Cafe Lindtner (a look at the display says more than a thousand words), on the promenade around the old Karstadt building, it can be admired, sometimes even amused in its peculiarities!

Other stops on our two and a half hour tour are the Eppendorfer Markt and the Cafe Borchers Destille. Just like the legendary "Uncle Pö" in the 70s where numerous well-known artists performed. Beyond the borders of Hamburg, Eppendorf became a well-known "trendy meeting point". We go on, see the Friedenseiche, the Seelemannpark and the Samuel Heinicke Bust (Heinicke was the founder of the deaf school system), then the St. Johannis Church, known as the "Wedding Church", and "Alma Hoppes Lustspielhaus". At Cafe Leinpfad and at Winterhuder Fährhaus, the latter today more of a meeting place for the dignified Hanseatic bourgeois nobility, we have left Eppendorf almost imperceptibly. Now we are in Winterhude ...

The district is even more colorful, which is particularly evident on the market square - one of Hamburg's largest organic markets. The fact that we have changed the district is now also evident in the development, because those typical Hamburg brick buildings of the 20s and 30s dominate in the northern Winterhude. From nothing, comes nothing! In Winterhude the lifting of the gate had a different effect: At that time mainly industrial and small craft businesses settled here. The district is still densely populated to this day, and is characterized by the close-meshed, small-scale backyard development. The Winterhuder can tolerate this well, because their district includes the Hamburg City Park ...

Our tour ends very close to Dorotheeneck.
