What does Max Roach’s album »We Insist! – Freedom Now Suite« tell us about the time in which it was created? And what does it still have to say to us today? Together with jazz musician Harald Kisiedu and musicologist Mauretta Heinzelmann, who hosts the evening, this Listening Session explores jazz history and the US civil rights movement of the 1960s. Alongside plenty of music, racism and feminism are also central to the discussion. The Zwischenraum at the Museum am Rothenbaum Kulturen und Künste der Welt (MARKK) provides the ideal setting for an exchange that also considers how jazz continues to reflect social realities and engage with political debates today.
The Listening Session accompanies the concert »We Insist 2026!« on 24 October 2026 in the Elbphilharmonie Recital Hall. With drummer Terri Lyne Carrington at its heart, the concert offers a contemporary musical perspective on feminism in jazz.
This event is presented in cooperation with the fluctoplasma festival. Under the theme »humanity in (dis)solution«, the festival promotes democracy, solidarity and diversity through artistic and discursive formats.
Elbphilharmonie PLUS is the Elbphilharmonie’s accompanying programme, opening up different perspectives on the music presented at the concert hall, whether as an extension of a concert visit or an experience in its own right. The programme encompasses interdisciplinary encounters and exhibitions as well as lecture concerts and film screenings in museums, libraries, cinemas and neighbourhood cultural centres.
