Seagulls screech, a ship sounds its horn, water laps against the shore and a motorbike rushes past. These – and many other – sounds and noises can regularly be heard around the Elbphilharmonie. Electronic artist Lawrence English, who performs in the Small Hall the evening before as part of the »ePhil« series, sets off on a sonic exploration around the concert hall and demonstrates how listening can be used as a source of creativity.
Field recording encourages us to listen much more closely and to distinguish between human hearing and the microphone capturing sounds. Lawrence English, who has travelled with his recording equipment from the Arctic to the Amazon, combines recorded sounds with electronic tones, transforms them and puts them back together in new ways.
During the workshop, Lawrence English will first talk about his work and explain his ideas. He will then head out with the participants to explore the area around the Elbphilharmonie in search of intriguing sounds, before returning to the concert hall for a final discussion.
The workshop is particularly suitable for beginners, but also offers plenty of inspiration for more advanced participants. Recording equipment is available on site, although participants are also welcome to bring their own. Elbphilharmonie PLUS is a programme that opens up different ways of looking at the music performed at the Elbphilharmonie – either to supplement a concert, or as an experience in its own right. Interdisciplinary encounters and exhibitions form part of the Elbphilharmonie PLUS programme, as do concert talks and films shown in museums, libraries, cinemas and community centres.
