Rafa Müller (2000*) is a Brazilian drummer who has been living in Hamburg since 2021. The musician from Porto Alegre has learned from greats such as Ricardo Arenhaldt, Holger Nell, Kiko Freitas and others. He has played on many stages throughout Brazil, the UK (e.g. Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival), Germany (e.g. ELBJAZZ, Multiphonics Festival Cologne, jazzahead) and has played with musicians such as Danilo Caymmi, Ben Street, Nailor Proveta, Florian Weber, Frederik Köster, Tiago Costa, Lisa Wulff, Frank Chastenier and many others.
The drummer founded his quintet in Hamburg in early 2022. The international line-up consists of the Swedish trumpeter Bjorn Atle Anfinsen, the Russian saxophonist Kamil Husyainov and the two young Hamburg musicians Jonas Oppermann (piano) and Lucas Kolbe (bass).
The compositions are packed with the harmonic density of the hard bop era, the melodic mysticism of southern Brazilian folk music and the space that invites each special voice to find its own place in the music. With a celebration of life, the young drummer wants to cultivate gratitude and self-reflection.
