This year’s FLOW Festival centres on early Baroque music from Hamburg. The programme features works by Thomas Selle, Hamburg’s director of church music, and his contemporaries from Hamburg and the surrounding area. For the opening concert in the Small Hall of the Laeiszhalle, four young specialists in historical performance practice will perform festive music on the theme of weddings.
Selle moved from Itzehoe to Hamburg in 1641, where he served as cantor at the Johanneum and as music director of the four main churches. There, in addition to an extremely extensive body of sacred music, he also composed secular works. With a programme centred on wedding music, the musicians navigate the boundary between the sacred and the secular – biblical texts from the Song of Songs, with descriptions that seem quite secular in themselves, are set against lively dance and festive music.
At the festive opening of the Early Music FLOW Festival, the audience can look forward to an interplay of exuberant celebration in historical style and moments of intimate intensity.
