Abel Selaocoe has been shaking up the music scene for a few years now: with his captivating concerts, in which he not only plays the cello but also sings and uses his body and instrument for percussion, he has won the hearts of audiences across genres. Together with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, he is now exploring France’s relationship with the African continent.
The Mistral, a strong wind that blows through France towards Africa, provides the inspiration for the evening’s programme: »It reshapes deep-rooted trees and influences vast landscapes. Like the Mistral, we traverse cultures that have existed in parallel for centuries and initially clashed through conquest and colonial rule, only to eventually come together through the pursuit of freedom and the search for a shared cultural expression.«
The musical journey begins at the Baroque court of the Sun King, Louis XIV, where Rameau, Lully, Marais and Delalande delighted the aristocratic audience. Via Debussy and Ligeti, who engaged with the music of non-European cultures in the 20th century, the programme arrives in the present day: original compositions by the charismatic Abel Selaochoe form the high point and conclusion of the concert.
