For more than twenty years, Third Coast Percussion has been shaking up the music scene with its exhilarating performances. The ultra-creative percussion quartet from Chicago follows a clear-cut mission of its own: to inspire audiences with unexpected musical experiences, push artistic boundaries and continually expand the repertoire with new compositions. Third Coast Percussion has premiered more than 100 works by composers including Missy Mazzoli, Danny Elfman and Philip Glass, and made history as the first percussion ensemble to win a Grammy in the »Chamber Music« category – followed by seven more Grammy nominations.
Now the powerhouse percussionists are coming to Hamburg! Just days before their performances of »Millennium Canticles« by NDR Artist Across Ensembles Missy Mazzoli, Third Coast Percussion presents a chamber concert for percussion in the Recital Hall at the Elbphilharmonie. With »Ripples in the Water: Philip Glass at 90«, the musicians pay tribute to the 90th birthday of the American master of minimal music.
In 2018, Glass wrote his first work for percussion ensemble, »Perpetulum«, for Third Coast Percussion. In this concert, it is paired with works by composers he has influenced, including music producer Jlin, pop polymath Devonté Hynes (»Blood Orange«) and Glass’s contemporary and fellow minimalist Steve Reich. The programme culminates in Third Coast Percussion’s acclaimed arrangements of Glass’s »Águas da Amazônia« and »Metamorphosis One«, performed on a wide range of traditional and unconventional percussion instruments.
