One of the most versatile European trumpeters, Matthias Schwengler has developed a distinctive sound of his own. Always searching for new sounds, he brings together jazz with styles from the Balkans, the Arab world, Latin America and other world music traditions. With his band Soulcrane, which he founded in 2015, he has developed a dark, chamber-like sound.
To mark Soulcrane’s tenth anniversary, French accordionist Laurent Derache, an exceptional musician from Paris, joins the band as a guest. Intimate and richly layered soundscapes unfold between soulful ballads and harmonically complex pieces. The combination of trumpet, accordion, bass and guitar creates a multifaceted sound that brings Schwengler’s remarkable sonic range and the quartet’s distinctive interplay vividly to the fore.
