The Theater für Children in Hamburg has been offering first-class entertainment for the youngest theatre fans for almost 40 years.
Hamburg's Theater für Kinder was founded on 27 February 1968, and it is thus Germany's oldest private theatre that holds performances for children the whole year round.
It offers plays for children from ages 5 to 6 yearsin a "real" theatre with professional artists. In addition to numerous first performances and premières (Astrid Lindgren, Ottfried Preussler, Paul Maar, Michael Ende, amongst others), it is a particular pioneering act by the Theater for Kinder to make classic operas accessible to its audience (since 1979).
"The Theater für Kinder has made it its goal to provide its young public with theatre as an art form. This means that the art of acting becomes united with stage design, costumes, lighting, music and poetry - of the highest quality." Uwe Deeken (2008).
In the future as well, we will always seek to rediscover the multitude of theatrical possibilities and to make accessible to children the surprising and enriching world of experiencing art. The theatre has increasingly developed into a musical theatre for children. The current repertoire contains two operatic productions and a stage play with music intended for children from the age of five, along with two musicals for children from the age of three.
