Trip to the Wohldorfer Wald

The tour starts centrally at the Jungfernstieg, directly at the Binnenalster. If you live a little outside, you can easily get to the starting point by train, for example. The traffic-calmed Jungfernstieg is not for nothing one of the most popular destinations in Hamburg. This is where the Alster ships set off. The view over the water on the first kilometers of the tour is unique. Moonlike buildings line up and there is always a bustle of activity on the water. Soon the mouth of the Alster is reached, leaving the lake behind. The next kilometers follow the Alster, which flows in many loops through the Hamburg city area.

There is hardly a more relaxed and greener way to cross Hamburg. Away from the traffic, the route heads north to the real highlight of this tour, the Wohldorfer Wald nature reserve. This forest area has been owned by the city of Hamburg since, believe it or not, 1437. The landscape is gently hilly, which is related to terrain changes during the last ice age. Therefore, cyclists will not only enjoy easy ascents and descents, but will also find a very varied natural environment with many rare species of flora and fauna.

The tour describes a generous exploration loop through the forest. It is cycled along magnificent forest paths through the greenery of the vast forest area, enjoying the silence of nature. Soon, the tour heads south again toward the city center along nature-oriented paths and small side roads. Passing the Volksdorfer pond meadows, we cycle on paths with as little traffic as possible and along some small bodies of water until we reach the Osterbek Canal. This flows from the east into the Außenalster. You now cycle around it. On the opposite shore, you can see the promenade that was used at the beginning of the tour. At the Jungfernstieg the circle closes and the starting point is reached again. By the way, this is also a good place to stop for a bite to eat.
