For tourists, a canal trip from one of the Landungsbrücken or the Jungfernstieg is the best way to experience the significance of water for Hamburg up close. Canal trips also depend on the water level. The most beautiful is the round trip with an originally renovated launch. During such a historical trip, you will "chat" in Low German about pirates like Klaus Störtebeker, and about merchants and traders. The prices are between 15.00 and 17.00 €; the journeys last about two hours.

The historic and the new on a canal cruise in Hamburg: the perfect mix

There are different providers for a canal trip, and each route is slightly different. The trip over the Kleine Alster is one of two options. The journey leads through the city centre past the town hall market to the Nikolaifleet, the Zollkanal, through the Speicherstadt and part of the old harbour. The Speicherstadt has a nostalgic charm with its red brick buildings with gables and oriels typical of the Wilhelminian Gothic. HafenCity, with its apartments, entertainment facilities and restaurants, has been built on the old harbour grounds in recent years.

This project is one of the most ambitious urban development projects in the world, and a visit to the Kesselhaus is a must for anyone interested in architecture. A model of HafenCity can be seen in the former energy centre of Speicherstadt. The Kesselhaus restaurant is also a good place to eat. Couples have just as much fun on a canal cruise as families with children. Hamburg has many highlights, but no visitor should miss a round trip through the historic canals.
