On Ulmenstrasse and at the beginning of Ohlsdorfer Strasse, you can still find some well-maintained bleaching houses from the mid-19th century. After the Great Fire of Hamburg in 1842, progressive industrialisation and urban redevelopment, some sections of the population were moved out to nearby surrounding areas. So the bleachers made up the largest group of new Winterhude residents.
