Every year the Night of the Churches adopts a new motto and demonstrates the diversity of Hamburg's churches.
Light in the darkness: Hamburg opens its churches
As late summer gives way to dusk, Hamburg's churches awaken in a special glow. On 20 September 2025, Hamburg's Night of Churches invites visitors to rediscover over 100 open church spaces under the motto ‘Light in the Darkness’. This night creates connections – between people, sounds, thoughts and light.
An evening full of diversity and encounters
The city becomes the stage for an extraordinary experience that combines art, music, spirituality and dialogue. Over 250 events transform the churches into lively places. Music of different genres flows through ancient walls, poetry meets laser light, and modern beats merge with centuries-old organ sounds. On this night, tradition and the present are not played off against each other, but linked together.
Experience what connects us
Visitors can immerse themselves in emotional contrasts. In one church, life pulsates with electronic music and light effects, while a few streets away, people meditate in silence. Rock bands perform at another venue, while conversations about science, faith and society take place in a church nave. Children and families also find space to participate, marvel and listen – stories, theatre and music make their eyes light up. Each church offers its own unique approach to the theme of the night – serious, playful, loud, quiet or experimental.
Open to everyone – accessible and free of charge
The Night of Churches is an inclusive event. All events are free of charge, many churches are wheelchair accessible, and some information is also available in easy-to-read language. Visitors can easily plan their own individual route via the website or the ‘Kirchennacht’ app. This allows them to create their own personal programme – whether spontaneous or planned.
For explorers of all kinds
This night is for everyone – culture enthusiasts, believers, seekers, families or those who are simply curious. Anyone who wants to experience the church in a completely different way will find inspiration, surprises and open doors here. It is an invitation to let yourself drift – between music and moments of tranquillity, between old walls and new ideas.
Did you know?
Some churches open rooms that are otherwise closed on this night or stage their outdoor areas with light art. The result is not just an event, but an experience with depth.
