The Hamburg Dance Triennial brings international stars and emerging voices of contemporary dance to the city. Every three years, performances, productions and encounters transform Hamburg into a stage for movement and artistic perspectives from around the world.
Hamburg in motion.
From 14 to 21 June 2026, the first Hamburg Dance Triennial transforms the city into an international stage for contemporary dance. Performances, artistic encounters and public events reveal the many facets of dance – on theatre stages, in public spaces and in dialogue with the urban community.
Under the motto “Brave Moves. Courageous Joy”, the festival celebrates dance as a powerful creative force. Visitors can experience performances by international artists, discover new choreographic perspectives and encounter dance as a shared cultural experience.
Dance as a language of our time
The Hamburg Dance Triennial approaches dance not only as a performing art but also as a social practice. Movement becomes a way to express identity, exchange ideas and explore new perspectives.
Across cultures, communities and generations, the festival highlights dance as a shared experience. Dance belongs to everyone – every body, every story and every background.
The programme of the festival
The programme of the Hamburg Dance Triennial combines international guest performances with new productions and experimental formats. Renowned dance companies and choreographers meet emerging voices of the contemporary dance scene.
Alongside stage performances, the festival includes artist talks, workshops, discussions and participatory projects. Some events take place outside traditional theatre venues – in urban spaces and cultural locations throughout the city. This makes dance visible and accessible in everyday life across Hamburg.
A network of Hamburg’s dance scene
The festival is supported by leading institutions of Hamburg’s dance landscape:
Hamburg Ballet / Hamburg State Opera, Kampnagel International Centre for Fine Arts, and K3 – Centre for Choreography | Tanzplan Hamburg. The first edition is curated by the co-artistic directors Gwen Hsin-Yi Chang and Monica Gillette.
