The Hamburg Dance Triennial brings international stars and emerging voices of contemporary dance to the city. Every three years, performances, productions and encounters transform Hamburg into a stage for movement and artistic perspectives from around the world.
Hamburg in motion.
From 14 to 21 June 2026, the first Hamburg Dance Triennial transforms the city into an international stage for contemporary dance. Performances, artistic encounters and public events reveal the many facets of dance – on theatre stages, in public spaces and in dialogue with the urban community.
Under the motto “Brave Moves. Courageous Joy”, visitors are invited to experience dance as a creative force. They can discover performances by international artists, explore new choreographic perspectives and experience dance as a shared experience. The Hamburg Dance Triennial brings audiences and dance practitioners together – openly, curiously and right in the heart of the city.
Dance as a language of our time
The Hamburg Dance Triennial approaches dance not only as a performing art but also as a social practice. Movement becomes a way to express identity, exchange ideas and explore new perspectives.
Across cultures, communities and generations, the festival highlights dance as a shared experience. Dance belongs to everyone – every body, every story and every background.
The programme of the festival
The programme of the Hamburg Dance Triennial combines international guest performances with new productions and experimental formats. Renowned dance companies and choreographers meet emerging voices of the contemporary dance scene.
In addition to stage performances, the programme also includes artist talks, workshops, discussion forums and participatory projects. Some events are deliberately held outside traditional theatres – for example, in urban spaces or at special cultural venues across the city. In this way, dance becomes an immediate experience for visitors and part of public life in Hamburg.
A network of Hamburg’s dance scene
The festival is supported by leading institutions of Hamburg’s dance landscape:
Hamburg Ballet / Hamburg State Opera, Kampnagel International Centre for Fine Arts, and K3 – Centre for Choreography | Tanzplan Hamburg. The first edition is curated by the co-artistic directors Gwen Hsin-Yi Chang and Monica Gillette.
