As the youngest winner of the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, it is high time for Yunchan Lim’s Elbphilharmonie debut. »I have made a firm commitment to devote my life entirely to music,« says the now 22-year-old pianist from South Korea.
Having already immersed himself in pianistic landmarks such as Chopin’s Études and Bach’s Goldberg Variations, recordings praised by The Guardian for their »youthful vitality coupled with interpretative maturity«, Lim now takes a different path. He appears in the Grand Hall with an all-Mozart programme. Among the sonatas he will perform is perhaps the most famous of them all: the Sonata in A major, featuring the ever-popular »Rondo alla turca«.
»You don’t have to be a piano connoisseur to recognise that you are dealing with an exceptional musician. Particularly refreshing is his willingness to defy expectations,« enthused Gramophone magazine. It is with this same freshness of spirit and openness to new ideas that Lim approaches Mozart, once again demonstrating his extraordinary talent.
