Under the motto »outragous«, the Symphonisches Blasorchester Norderstedt invites audiences to its spring concert in the Laeiszhalle. For the fifth concert in this series, the orchestra, conducted by Bernhard Volk, presents another facet of contemporary symphonic wind music. The programme brings together works that explore public outcry, human destinies and rarely heard sonic colours.
The centrepiece of the concert is »The Heroes of Orzán« by Antón Alcalde. In this seven-movement work, the Spanish composer tells the story of a real event that took place off the coast of A Coruña in 2012. Through vivid musical imagery and narration, the work recounts the dramatic efforts of three police officers who, on a stormy night, tried to rescue someone from the Atlantic and lost their own lives in the process.
In his three-movement work »Time for Outrage!«, Luxembourg composer Marco Pütz gives musical expression to protest against global problems and social injustice. Complex rhythms and urgent changes of metre build momentum, from the restrained opening movement, »Breaking Silence«, to the fast-paced finale, »Rock the Culprits!«.
With »Run to the Light«, percussionist and composer Ivan Trevino overturns the usual orchestral hierarchy and challenges traditional listening habits. Percussion moves out of the rhythmic background to take centre stage as the leading melodic voice – a rare opportunity to discover contemporary wind music from an entirely new perspective.
