The lock group Uelzen consisting of locks I and II lies between Uelzen and Wittingen bei Esterholz. In addition to the Lüneburg ship lift near Scharnebeck, both locks are two other impressive descent structures of the Elbe side canal (ESK).
The Uelzen lock has been one of the largest inland navigation locks in Germany since 1973 due to its lifting height of 23 m. The construction of the Uelzen II lock has significantly increased the performance of the Elbe side channel since 2006. The two locks, which work independently of one another, ensure the operational security of the lock group in the long term.
Find out more interesting details of these unique technical structures in the Lüneburg Heath during the guided tours. The meeting point is the parking lot “Zur Esterholzer Schleuse” in front of the information board. Cost per person: 3 euros, children 1.50
