SCHAU! Exhibition

The exhibition “SCHAU!” at nachtspeicher23 features drawings and video works that have been displayed in the project space’s shop window over the past few months.

In May, June and July 2026, a total of three drawing duos were exhibited as part of the INSIDE DRAFTSWOMEN series. Initiated by Christine Brey, the series has, since 2019, served as a platform for contemporary drawing and fosters dialogue between different artistic positions and perspectives.

The shop window was also used as an exhibition space for media art. The video works, curated by Faezeh Nikoozad, bring together pieces that deliberately operate without sound and explore the theme of encounter – whether as a gaze, distance, closeness or silent coexistence. In doing so, the shop window itself became a place of encounter between the inside and the outside.

What previously complemented one another through the changing shop window displays now comes together in this exhibition. The juxtaposition of drawing and video opens up a space in which different temporalities and modes of perception no longer merely coexist. In this interplay, new encounters and connections emerge – between the artistic positions as well as between medium, gaze and space – which shift and renegotiate one another.

As part of Hamburg Art Week, the works are now being presented together for the first time in the exhibition space. On display are works by Vanessa Hartmann, Si-Ying Fung, Sylvie Ringer, Simone Kesting, Nazgol Emami, Sana Ghobbeh, Amirali Ghasemi, Sin Seeni, Simin Yaqubi and a special guest.

There will also be a performance by Lubi Barre, which forms part of the ‘PULSE’ performance programme (Sat 5 Sept at 7 pm):

‘The Mona Lisa Syndrome’ is a literary installation with a live reading that explores the intertwining of childhood, migration, memory and motherhood through personal memories, diaries, photographs, objects and audio recordings. Taking as its starting point a trip to Paris with her sons, the work shows how different childhoods persist simultaneously across generations and geographical spaces, whilst shaping one another.

The annual programme at nachtspeicher23 is funded by the Department of Culture and Media of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
