*Pig Feast* is a documentary film about the massive deforestation in Papua. The Indonesian government is having huge plantations established in southern Papua, with no regard for the indigenous population or their environment. The plan is to grow rice, as well as sugar cane for the production of bioethanol and oil palms for the production of biodiesel. Vast areas of rainforest are being destroyed. It is currently the largest deforestation operation in the world. According to the government, this measure is intended to improve food security and produce alternative fuels.
The film shows just how brutally and rapidly these state-directed mega-projects are being implemented. It portrays Indonesia as a colonial power that makes decisions as it sees fit and shows no regard for the local population. Tens of thousands of soldiers have already been deployed to Papua, where they are enforcing the destruction of forests, land grabs and commercial interests.
But the indigenous Papuans are fighting back. A moving, harrowing story about deforestation, the climate crisis, the dark side of the so-called green energy transition, and massive local resistance to it.
