Sabine Niemann’s works explore themes ranging from the city, the harbor, and the landscape to the very edge of abstraction—spanning from Köhlbrand to the North Sea, from backyards to Hagenbeck. Her casual, spontaneous acrylic paintings, drawings, and sketches depict people, animals, and objects in characteristic poses—from soccer players to sloths, from abandoned places to good-for-nothing dogs. In a delightful way, the images unsettle the viewer with their relaxed, often humorous approach. They are all characterized by the visibility of the gestural creative process—including traces of all kinds. The focus is on energy and materiality, and on the subtle glow of colors and moments.
The diverse exhibition, comprising around 90 works, is on view on the 6th floor of Block X in the Speicherstadt (elevator), a special location where the view of the paintings blends with that of the canal and the Wasserschlösschen.
