Hardly any other work exemplifies the expressive power of the Italian Baroque quite so impressively as Claudio Monteverdi’s »Madrigali guerrieri et amorosi«. In this collection, published in 1638, passionate laments of love and martial tones are given equal weight. Monteverdi explored the boundaries of musical expression and created a fascinating panorama of human emotions ranging from longing to ecstasy and despair.
With his eighth book of madrigals, Monteverdi’s decades-long engagement with the genre reached its zenith. Particularly famous is the monumental »Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda«, in which the composer used musical techniques that were novel for the time to make the duel between two knights immediately audible. The Monteverdi Choir Hamburg and instrumentalists from the lautten compagney Berlin, conducted by Antonius Adamske, are dedicating themselves to this milestone in European music history – a concert full of passion, poetry and musical discoveries.
