There are whistles, bangs, and trumpets. The atmosphere reaches its peak when the Hamburg Classical Philharmonic Orchestra strikes up Edward Elgar’s »Pomp and Circumstance« marches toward the end of its Proms concerts. Standing and waving flags rhythmically, the enthusiastic audience sings along to »Land of Hope and Glory.« Almost anything that contributes to the exuberant atmosphere is allowed. High spirits are the order of the day when the orchestra presents the highlights of its program.
