The first ePhil concert of the season brings a double feature: Carmen Villain opens the evening for Jlin.
Since her debut album »Dark Energy« (2015), US composer Jlin has attracted attention with every new release. In 2023, she was a Pulitzer Prize finalist with »Perspective«, an album she wrote for the ensemble Third Coast Percussion. For her latest album »Akoma«, she has collaborated with music legends including Björk and Philip Glass, once again proving why she is considered one of the most exciting and influential musicians in the USA. She skilfully combines classical and electronic influences to create her distinctive, driving music. Given the rhythmic, percussive nature of her sound, it comes as little surprise that Jlin worked in a steel mill before embarking on her career. Yet these hard-edged sounds also contain moments of elegance and beauty, woven in so convincingly that Jlin’s music has even provided the backdrop for models strutting down the runway at fashion shows.

Jlin has already reworked a track by Carmen Villain, »Blue« – making a shared bill for the two artists all the more fitting. Born to a Norwegian father and a Mexican mother, Carmen Villain is now based in London. She first made a name for herself there as a promising indie singer-songwriter with guitar before turning her focus entirely to electronic music. She has now left behind the ethereal, dreamlike worlds of her early albums once again: her new album »Memoria« delves into bass-heavy dub techno, with atmospheric soundscapes unfolding above its deep, propulsive rhythms.
