Hamburger Camerata / Sergey Malov Classical Music

He was not simply a violinist, not merely a composer: Niccolò Paganini was a phenomenon! The »devil’s violinist« with his nimble, elongated fingers unlocked previously unimagined technical dimensions for the violin and redefined the very concept of genius – with all the spectacle and darkness that comes with it.

In the third »Multitudes« concert by the Hamburg Camerata, Sergey Malov dives headfirst into Paganini’s universe under the motto »Storm«. He unleashes hurricane-like energy through Paganini’s wildly virtuosic solo works, which then sweeps into the more melodically conceived Second Violin Concerto – until, in the end, the little bells ring out. These give the concerto its famous nickname »La Campanella« and helped make its finale especially renowned.

But it was also in a storm that Ludwig van Beethoven once conquered the stage with his Third Symphony, the »Eroica«. This work in heroic E-flat major brought a literal breath of fresh air into the history of the symphony. From the very first bar, it almost compels the audience to listen attentively, to grasp the revolutionary messages woven into the music itself.
