Two of Brazil’s most exciting young musicians, violinist Guido Sant’Anna and guitarist Plínio Fernandes, come together at the Elbphilharmonie to celebrate the classical music of Latin America with works by Heitor Villa-Lobos, Astor Piazzolla and others. What unites these composers is their admiration for the European classical tradition and their deep roots in the folk traditions and popular dance music of their homelands.
While studying at London’s Royal Academy of Music, Plínio Fernandes became friends with cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason. Their arrangement of »Scarborough Fair« attracted an audience of millions online. Building on that success, Fernandes secured a recording contract with the prestigious Decca label and launched an international concert career. His latest album is devoted to the influence of Johann Sebastian Bach on Brazilian music.
Guido Sant’Anna attracted international attention as the first Latin American winner of the prestigious Fritz Kreisler Competition in Vienna. Since then, the young musician has appeared in concert halls around the world, primarily as a soloist with orchestra – including a previous appearance at the Elbphilharmonie. Now, in the intimate setting of a duo with guitar, he demonstrates an equally compelling command of this very different musical landscape.
