»Scarlatti is a composer who is very close to my heart; not only because he was Italian, but because for me he embodies the ideal of a great master,« says pianist Federico Colli about Domenico Scarlatti. Having already recorded two acclaimed Scarlatti albums, Colli is the perfect choice to open the »Pianomania« series, which places Scarlatti’s sonatas centre stage.

Colli has already recorded 32 sonatas by the Neapolitan master, a mere fraction of the 555 Scarlatti composed. These short works may not compare in scale to the multi-movement monuments of Beethoven, yet each contains a fascinating musical microcosm. From this immense body of work, Colli has selected his personal favourites for the concert.

While Scarlatti wrote hundreds of sonatas, Leoš Janáček composed only one: with the cryptic title »1. X. 1905«. On that day, during a demonstration in Brno, a worker was killed by a soldier. Deeply shaken by the event, Janáček sat down at the piano and transformed his emotions into music of striking intensity and urgency. Colli concludes the evening with one of the best-known melodies in music history: Mozart’s »Rondo alla turca« from his Piano Sonata No. 11, a tune so familiar that almost everyone can hum along, having long since made its way beyond the concert hall into film, radio and television.
