The FatJazz format at the JazzHall will feature a modern jazz band in the first set of the evening.

JAZZZALL ENSEMBLE
The JazzHall Ensemble brings together selected master's students from the jazz program at the University of Music and Performing Arts Hamburg. Under the direction of Gabriel Coburger, the musicians meet regularly for intensive rehearsals, developing their own compositions in complex, modern arrangements. The result is a multifaceted, stylistically diverse set – full of energy, courage, and sonic curiosity.
Director: Gabriel Coburger
With this project, John Schroeder and Gabriel Coburger have fulfilled a dream. John grew up listening to the music of Bob Degen in Frankfurt in the 1980s. During the pandemic, there was finally enough time to get closer to his music. Bob Degen was asked if he would be willing to record his music with this band. No sooner said than done, a digital version of Bob Degen's old hits was created. It's a very special way of playing the piano, somewhere between Blue Note and ECM. Just an American in Frankfurt.
Bob Degen – born on January 24, 1944 in Scranton, Pennsylvania – began studying at the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1961. At the same time, he took lessons from the famous pianist Margarete Chaloff, as well as Herbie Hancock and Steve Kuhn. Since 1965, Bob Degen has lived in Europe, with interruptions, where he played with Dexter Gordon, Art Farmer, and Attila Zoller. After worldwide tours with the famous Original Glenn Miller Orchestra under the direction of Buddy de Franco, Bob Degen settled in Frankfurt am Main. He has recorded numerous albums with the Mangelsdorff brothers and saxophonist Heinz Sauer, and for many years he was a pianist and soloist in the hr Jazz Ensemble. In 1993, a trio album recorded in New York with Michael Formanek and Bill Stewart was released. As a “musician’s musician,” he is a fantastic accompanist and soloist and enjoys the highest acclaim.
The fact that John Schröder, born in Frankfurt am Main in 1964, was able to become a "guitar prodigy" also has something to do with Volker Kriegel. As a teenager, Schröder could often be found at the "Guitar Center," a guitar shop that Kriegel had run with guitar maker Peter Coura from 1975 on Schumannstrasse in Frankfurt's Westend district. At that time, pretty much everyone who wanted to make it as a rock, pop, or jazz musician met in this "guitarists' nest" (as Kriegel put it). Among them were Ali Neander of the Rodgau Monotones, for example, as well as Peter Maffay for a while, Michael Sagmeister, of course, and the young John Schröder. It was also Kriegel who took Schröder to Hamburg in 1982 for an NDR workshop, where the then 18-year-old guitarist played a radio concert, first with his own trio and then with the Mild Maniac Orchestra. His debut album, "Landscape," was released in 1983, on which he appeared not only as a guitarist, but also as a pianist, drummer, and bassist. He also played in saxophonist Christof Lauer's quartet, bassist Dieter Ilg's trio, and with international artists such as Randy Brecker and Joey Baron. In 1994, Schröder moved to Berlin, where he has lived ever since.
