Fab Lecture: Science and Art
This time’s topic: Science Meets Art – New Perspectives for Education and Innovation
Admission: Free
We want to discuss the potential of interdisciplinary research and development and STEAM for children and young people. We will explore this topic in two presentations.
Dr. Skadi Kull, director of the “Molecules & Schools” chemistry school lab and a member of the CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter Cluster of Excellence at the University of Hamburg, introduces students to chemistry, nanoscience, and the life sciences at an advanced level through a variety of experiments. Another approach aimed at sparking an interest in the natural sciences is the Arts & Science initiative of the Cluster of Excellence: Images from the microcosm of basic scientific research are not only scientifically insightful but, with their wave-like structures and bursts of color, are also artistic in their own way. They offer a gateway to understanding the underlying physics and chemistry.
Ingeborg Adler (CUI: Öffentlichkeitsarbeit und Organisation Arts & Science) will talk about this topic.
The second lecture will be given by philosopher, Germanist, director, musician, and educator Axel Dürkop. In his current lecture, “Man Does Not Live by Code Alone: Why STEM Needs the Arts and Social Interaction,” he explores the importance of art in the natural sciences. Axel Dürkop has long examined topics in computer science from both technical and philosophical perspectives. He is a passionate autodidact and lifelong learner. As a research assistant at the Technical University of Hamburg, his focus is on researching and designing open, participatory event formats at the intersection of art, music, theater, literature, and science.
