A landscape comprising loudspeaker sculptures, the mosaik ensemble and the Grau-Schumacher piano duo unfolds in the Recital Hall. In these works, some of which are musical theatre pieces, the loudspeaker sculptures each take on the role of individual musicians. Each of the loudspeakers, distributed amongst the audience, has its own part to play and becomes accessible.
A special place is reserved for Brian Ferneyhough’s legendary, highly complex work »Firecycle Beta« for two pianos, two orchestras and five conductors. This monumental work from 1971 marks the beginning of the New Complexity era. Here, it is performed by the renowned Grau-Schumacher piano duo together with the Bremen Speaker Orchestra. To this end, a precise interpretation of the practically unplayable orchestral parts was created as a multi-channel recording, following more than a year’s work and involving considerable digital effort.
The Grau-Schumacher piano duo, as well as the Mosaik ensemble from Berlin, have made a name for themselves in the world of New Music. The loudspeaker orchestra is a creation of the Neue Musik Bremen project group. Its sculptures have been assembled from a wide variety of small loudspeakers, thereby becoming works of art.
