Work for work, Swiss artist Zimoun arranges hundreds of identical elements into a single sculpture until the space comes to life in a complex ballet of simplicities. In »Elbphilharmonie Visions«, he applies the essence of this process – alongside a new installation in the Recital Hall – for the first time to an orchestra comprising 40 double bassists from the NDR Ensembles and guests from across Germany. This sonic organism, conducted by Alan Gilbert, plays with contrasts such as routine and chance, repetition and deviation, order and chaos, precision and imperfection. Following this, Thomas Cornelius – a composer and, as the resident organist, intimately familiar with the Elbphilharmonie’s opulent organ like no other – takes what was heard earlier as the starting point for his new work »Refractions«. In it, he picks up on sonic impulses, develops them further, and uses them to create his own musical spaces.
