What do people write down when no one else is reading? Diaries are perhaps the most honest form of literature. Here, people love, gossip, doubt, gush – and sometimes, quite unwittingly, take stock of their lives in a very funny way.

In his book »Diaries of Note«, Shaun Usher brings together 366 diary entries from throughout world history: intimate, funny, clever, surprising and sometimes disarmingly honest snapshots of famous and unknown people. Their diary entries not only document the events, but also offer a direct insight into how their authors experienced them.
At the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg, actors Iris Berben, Anke Engelke, Devid Striesow and Louis Hofmann will read diary entries from the book »Diaries of Note – Days that Shook the World«, in which we encounter great figures such as Edvard Munch, Frida Kahlo, Nelson Mandela, Franz Kafka, Astrid Lindgren, Thomas Mann and Virginia Woolf are presented not as monuments but as approachable individuals: secret thoughts, intense emotions, petty vanities and absurd observations lead to a realisation that is as simple as it is wonderful: even icons were sometimes just ordinary people. The event will be hosted by Marie-Christine Knop.
