For three decades now, the Cuarteto Casals has represented the very pinnacle of what four musicians can achieve on 16 strings in terms of beauty of sound and depth of expression. The ensemble’s playing is distinguished by a unique clarity that possesses, as the Badische Zeitung put it, »something fluorescent, almost glass-like«. In the 2026/27 season, the Spanish-Catalan quartet showcases its undiminished artistic vitality on a major anniversary tour – with an essential stop at the Elbphilharmonie.
The programme is framed by works by Haydn and Mendelssohn, which share not only a key but also a similar artistic outlook. Both composers combined a spirit of innovation and emotional intensity with impeccable craftsmanship, creating works of perfect formal balance. It is hardly surprising that they remain cornerstones of the chamber music repertoire.
Yet the Cuarteto Casals is as committed to the future as it is to tradition. To mark its anniversary, the ensemble is also looking ahead, having commissioned a new work from the Spanish composer Raquel García-Tomás. Having already written extensively for string quartet, she will offer audiences a glimpse of the future through her fresh musical language.
