Wasteland – a story of upheaval, loss and the courage to start afresh.
700 cows, a village, a life’s work – and then comes the fall of the Berlin Wall. As everything begins to unravel in 1989, Maik loses not only his job at the collective farm’s cowshed, but also his foothold in life. For his daughter Marina, however, a door opens: A risky operation in the West saves her life – and makes her dream of freedom. She flees the confines of village life, becomes a performer, and lives a wild and unbound existence. Yet the past won’t let her go. The memory of Cow No. 32, affectionately known as ‘Karla’, becomes an unexpected inner compass for Marina when she faces an existential decision.
With great emotional force, Brachland tells the story of two life paths spanning the end of the GDR and the present day.
The play explores identity, home and freedom – and what remains when everything familiar disappears. Based on biographical accounts, a personal story of transformation takes shape, one that lingers long in the memory.
