For several years now, the Hamburger Kammermusikfreunde have marked the historically significant dates of 25 and 30 January, the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp and the Nazi seizure of power, with a concert entitled »Verfemte Musik – gerettete Klänge«. And musicians from Jerusalem, of course, would not have been able to perform in Germany during the »Thousand Years« proclaimed by the Nazi regime.
Alongside works by five composers of Jewish heritage, Gustav Mahler, Arnold Schönberg, Kurt Weill, Fritz Kreisler and Werner Richard Heymann, the Jerusalem Quartet brings music by other composers to the programme as well. The ensemble makes its first Hamburg appearance with its new violist and is joined by acclaimed baritone Benjamin Appl, expanding the all-strings programme with a compelling selection of chamber music songs. An evening rich in musical discoveries.
