The Hamburg State Opera is among Europe’s leading opera houses. Founded in 1678 as Germany’s first civic opera, it has been a venue for pioneering music theatre, a stage for spectacular world premieres, and a driving force of artistic innovation far beyond Hamburg for nearly 350 years.

Under the artistic direction of Tobias Kratzer and General Music Director Omer Meir Wellber, the Hamburg State Opera stands for artistic curiosity and a diverse programme. “Every evening is a premiere” is not just a motto, but the expression of an expanded concept of repertoire: the first season features nine new productions – six on the Main Stage and three in the opera stabile – which explore the boundaries of music theatre through unusual combinations of subject matter and fresh perspectives. The Hamburg State Opera remains a repertoire house, but diversity here is not an end in itself; it is a commitment. With the programme strand FRAMING the REPERTOIRE, works are examined in their historical depth and reinterpreted from today’s perspective – with artistic precision and social relevance.

The Hamburg State Opera is an exciting place for families too: In family tours (from age 6), children and parents can explore backstage areas such as the stage, workshops and rehearsal rooms. The CLICK in – education programme offers creative projects, workshops and rehearsal visits for schools. Families can also enjoy child-friendly introductions before performances, and children from the age of 6 can join the Alsterspatzen children’s and youth choir.
