250 Years of Caspar David Friedrich

FROM 15 DECEMBER 2023 TO 1 APRIL 2024 Art for a New Era

The landscape painter Caspar David Friedrich, who came from northern Germany, is considered one of the most famous German artists. His work "Wanderer over the Sea of Fog" is internationally known and one of the most famous works of the Romantic period. On the occasion of his 250th birthday, the Hamburger Kunsthalle is dedicating a comprehensive anniversary exhibition to Caspar David Friedrich from 15 December 2023 to 1 April 2024, which will present a panorama of his art: his landscape depictions are particularly famous, as they show Caspar David Friedrich's relationship between man and nature in the style of Romanticism.

Caspar David Friedrich stands for the art of Romanticism like no other artist. On the occasion of his 250th birthday, the Hamburger Kunsthalle is presenting over 60 paintings, including numerous iconic key works, and around 100 drawings as well as selected works by his artist friends. The exhibition thus offers the most extensive panorama of his art for many years. The focus is on the unique relationship between man and nature in Friedrich's work.

At the beginning of the 19th century, he thus set essential impulses and made the genre of landscape into "art for a new time". In addition, the view of around 20 contemporary artists on Friedrich's work in a separate section of the exhibition shows its great relevance. Last but not least, the fateful connection between man and nature that Friedrich's works speak of is existentially touching in the face of climate change and environmental destruction. The anniversary exhibition on the 250th birthday of Caspar David Friedrich is under the patronage of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
